Explanation
Avapro (Irbesartan) is correct. Edarbi (Azilsartan Medoxomil) is an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) prodrug that is hydrolyzed during absorption to azilsartan. Azilsartan selectively blocks angiotensin II at the AT
1 receptor, reducing vasoconstriction and aldosterone secretion. Irbesartan is also an ARB and therefore has a similar mechanism of action. Azilsartan medoxomil is indicated for the treatment of hypertension.

The recommended adult dose is 80 mg orally once daily. A starting dose of 40 mg may be considered for patients receiving high-dose diuretic therapy because of the increased risk of hypotension. It may be taken with or without food. Reported adverse effects include dizziness, hypotension, diarrhea, nausea, and muscle spasms.
Daliresp (Roflumilast) is a phosphodiesterase-4 inhibitor used to reduce exacerbations in severe COPD associated with chronic bronchitis. Reyataz (Atazanavir) is an HIV-1 protease inhibitor. Cerebyx (Fosphenytoin) is a prodrug of phenytoin used for seizure management. Flomax (Tamsulosin) is an α
1A-adrenergic antagonist used for benign prostatic hyperplasia.
Key Points:
-
ARBs carry a boxed warning for fetal toxicity and should be discontinued as soon as pregnancy is detected.
-
Monitor serum potassium and renal function, particularly in patients with kidney impairment or those taking other potassium-increasing medications.
-
Dispense azilsartan medoxomil in its original container to protect it from light and moisture.
Exam Pearl: The “-sartan” suffix identifies angiotensin II receptor blockers.
