What is the PTCE?

The Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam is the examination used in PTCB’s Certified Pharmacy Technician pathway. It evaluates knowledge relevant to technician responsibilities. Certification does not replace state registration or other requirements for working as a technician.

Exam format and timing

The computer-based exam has 90 multiple-choice questions: 80 scored and 10 unscored. Allow two hours for the appointment, including a five-minute tutorial, 110-minute exam, and five-minute survey. The unscored questions are not identified.

PTCE content areas for 2026

The PTCB outline effective January 6, 2026 assigns these weights:

  • Medications — 35%.
  • Federal requirements — 18.75%.
  • Patient safety and quality assurance — 23.75%.
  • Order entry and processing — 22.50%.

PTCE passing score and results

The scaled passing score is 1,400 on a 1,000–1,600 scale. An unofficial result is available after the exam; official results are normally posted in the PTCB account within three weeks. Check PTCB for current eligibility and retake requirements.

A practical PTCE study plan

Begin by identifying weaknesses in medication knowledge, calculations, workflow, safety, and federal requirements. Make calculations a regular part of study instead of saving them for the final week. Learn medication names together with their indications, storage needs, and common safety concerns.

For a four- to six-week plan, start with focused domain review, then increase mixed practice as the exam approaches. A two- to three-week review should be built around existing knowledge and repeated weak areas rather than attempting to learn everything from the beginning.

  • Review a focused topic, then apply it to practice questions.
  • Work on conversions, quantities, concentrations, and order-entry calculations regularly.
  • Alternate medication safety and federal-requirement review while keeping medications in daily rotation.
  • Record mistakes in a short error log and retest them within 24–48 hours.
  • In the final week, use timed mixed sets and revisit the calculations or concepts you still miss.

Common preparation mistakes

Avoid studying only medication lists while ignoring workflow, federal requirements, and quality assurance. Reading without question practice can hide weaknesses; begin mixed practice early enough to change your study plan.

Answer review should explain both the correct choice and the mistake in your reasoning. Track patterns such as conversion errors, missed safety cues, or confusion about technician responsibilities. Small targeted corrections are more useful than repeating entire chapters without a goal.
